This great Boudhanath Stupa was enlisted on world heritage site by UNESCO in 1979 and has become the common monument of the people all over the world. Today it is a major destination for pilgrims from the Himalayas, Tibet and South-East and Eastern Asia. It has become the center of a thriving town of monasteries, craftsmanship, and business. It is believed that this great Stupa was built during the Kashyapa Buddha’s end period and the beginning period of Shakayamuni Buddha. Buddhist people believe that the relics of Kashyap Buddha, the third Buddha of Bhadrakalpa was enshrined in the dome of this Stupa. Built some time around the 14th century, the huge meditative monument is said to have been created just after the passing of the Buddha. The huge offering site quickly become an focal point of worship and offering in the area. The structure of the building consists of a giant dome, on the top which sits a Buddhist pyramid tower. All of this sits on top of huge steps shaped like mandalas themselves. Originally the stupa’s spot was on an important trade route which allowed for a steady stream of possible converts. Among the Nepalese in Kathmandu, the stupa is simply referred to as “Chorten Chenpo” which translates to “Great Tower” or just “Great Stupa.” No matter what pilgrims called it, they flocked to the monument in droves.

This great Stupa is known as the mind nature of Buddhas of three time-past, present and the future. This Great Stupa is also called the Stupa of enlightenment or Bodhi Stupa. It is also known as Jhyarung Khhhashyor. This Stupa is also one of the largest and most significant Buddhist monument in the world. This Stupa is religious, cultural and archaeologically very important. From above, Bodnath Stupa looks like a giant mandala, or diagram of the Buddhist cosmos. And as in all Tibetan mandalas, four of the Dhyani Buddhas mark the cardinal points, with the fifth, Vairocana, enshrined in the center (in the white hemisphere of the stupa). The five Buddhas also personify the five elements (earth, water, fire, air and ether), which are represented in the stupa’s architecture.
